Background of the Minoayawin Mobile Outreach Program (MMOP)
Over the past year, Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin Inc. (KIM Inc.) engaged extensively with communities in Thompson and other northern locations to identify and address the healthcare needs of members facing significant challenges. Through these engagements, the critical need for a mobile outreach service became apparent, particularly to provide primary care and harm reduction services directly to the community. This needs to lead to the development of a proposal that secures a provincial funding grant, enabling the launch of a mobile outreach van centred in the Thompson region.
Program Development:
The MMOP was designed based on feedback from community members who highlighted numerous healthcare challenges, particularly the lack of access to preventative services for the unhoused population. The van is equipped to meet these needs through comprehensive services structured to offer immediate and ongoing support.
Key Features of the MMOP:
Harm Reduction:
- Mobile Crisis Services: The van functions as a mobile crisis intervention unit, providing timely support to individuals experiencing withdrawal-related crises.
- Alcohol Use Disorder Management/Withdrawal: Specialized support for managing alcohol use disorder, including safe withdrawal practices.
- Naloxone Distribution: In response to the opioid crisis, naloxone kits are available on the van to address and prevent opioid overdoses.
Primary Care:
- Accessible Preventative Healthcare: The van enhances access to basic medical care, health assessments, and necessary medications, promoting preventive health measures.
- Support for Individuals Experiencing Intimate Partner Violence: Tailored services provide a safe environment for recovery, particularly for women facing intimate partner violence.
- Community Health and Social Services Collaboration: The van partners with local services to extend the network of support available to community members.
First Nations Centered Care:
- Empowerment and Active Participation: The program is committed to empowering community members by involving them in care decisions and ensuring that services are responsive and culturally attuned.
- Navigators: Dedicated staff help guide individuals through healthcare processes, ensuring seamless access to required support.
Trauma-Informed Care:
Anti-Indigenous Specific Racism: The MMOP is committed to providing care that is free from racism and discrimination.
- Holistic Support and Cultural Reconnection: The program supports individuals’ healing journeys, addressing physical, emotional, and spiritual needs while facilitating cultural reconnection through the involvement of Elders and Knowledge Keepers.
Grant Funding and Support:
The MMOP is proudly funded by the Province of Manitoba, acknowledging the significant support that has made this transformative project possible. KIM Inc. is committed to a productive partnership with the province to create substantial, positive changes in healthcare accessibility and quality for First Nations communities.
