New First Nations-led mobile outreach program supports those who have challenges finding housing in Thompson, MB

Treaty 5 Territory (Thompson, MB) – Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin Inc. (KIM Inc.), in partnership with the Province of Manitoba, is proud to announce the Minoayawin Mobile Outreach Program, which began serving those who have challenges finding housing in Thompson on Sept. 23, 2024.  This innovative program focuses on bringing essential health care and harm reduction services to the streets of Thompson marking a significant step forward in addressing the health care challenges faced by some First Nations people in the region.

The Minoayawin van is designed to improve access to primary health care services and harm reduction supports, with a particular focus on racism-free and non-judgemental care. Funded by the Province of Manitoba, this initiative underscores a shared commitment to improving health outcomes for First Nations people and the broader Thompson community.

Dr. Barry Lavallee, CEO of KIM Inc., emphasized the importance of the program’s community-centered approach, “This program is not just about providing services; it’s about building relationships and trust within the community. We have worked closely with community members to ensure the van meets their specific needs, creating a pathway towards long-term health and well-being.”

Equipped to provide a wide range of services, the van is staffed with an all-First Nations team, including a program director, social worker, nurse practitioner, outreach nurse and an outreach worker all of whom will provide access to western and traditional care to those who request it.

“Our government is proud to be partnering with the Minoayawin Mobile Outreach Program. We know it is important to meet folks wherever they are along their journey to help them access the right supports, including in community. This program will do just that. This $1.34 million dollar investment will help hundreds of people in Thompson and neighbouring First Nations.  The van will be tailored to address the unique needs of each community and meet Manitobans on their path to health and wellness,” said Minister of Housing, Addictions and Homelessness Bernadette Smith.

Collaboration with local stakeholders is a cornerstone of the Minoayawin Mobile Outreach Program. Partnerships with organizations such as the Manitoba Keewatinowi Okimakanak Inc., Keewatin Tribal Council, the Northern Regional Health Authority, the Manitoba Harm Reduction Network, the city of Thompson, RCMP, and others ensure the program is responsive to the evolving needs of the community.
