The KIM team invites applicants to apply for an exciting opportunity to join our First Nations Anti Racism Response team as a Sakihiwewin Client Advocate assisting clients throughout their healthcare journeys. This innovative and evolving role is one of KIM’s many initiatives to address Indigenous specific racism within the healthcare system by improving health experiences and health outcomes for First Nations people in northern Manitoba.

  • Listening, hearing, and acknowledging the concerns, questions, and experiences of Indigenous clients.
  • Ensuring Indigenous clients have the support of an Indigenous Advocacy team within the health care system.
  • Assisting Indigenous clients in understanding their health care in real time.
  • Acknowledging and supporting the voice of Indigenous clients.
  • Promoting client safety within the Northern Manitoba healthcare system.

The Sakihiwewin Client Advocate is a relationship builder and conflict resolution professional whose goal is to improve each client’s experience when interacting with the Northern Manitoba healthcare system.
The successful candidate will possess the following qualifications:

  • Successful work/life experience in care and support fields; previous training and experience in a relevant field (Health, Nursing, Social Services, Client/Community Support) is an asset.
  • Knowledge of Northern MB Indigenous people’s culture, customs, traditions, and languages.
  • Knowledge and understanding of Indigenous specific racism is an asset.
  • The ability to speak/understand one of the Northern First Nations languages is an asset, with preference for an ability to speak and understand Dene.
  • Excellent interpersonal and conflict resolution skills including the ability to work as a team member.
  • Excellent collaboration, facilitation, and negotiation skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills including the ability to present information in a clear, concise way.
  • Experience with MS Office (Word, Excel) and virtual meeting platforms (Zoom, Microsoft Teams).
  • Ability to work in a stressful environment.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work well independently with minimal supervision.
  • Employment or Volunteer experience in an advocacy role is an asset.
  • Ability to speak Dene or Cree is an asset.

The following are considered conditions of employment:

  • Must be able to work evenings, weekends, and a flexible work schedule as required.
  • Satisfactory criminal record/vulnerable persons/child abuse registry checks will be required.
  • Must be able to travel to Winnipeg on rare occasions with appropriate notice.
  • Eligible to work in Canada.
