INTRODUCTION
Keewatinohk Inniniw Minoayawin Inc. (KIM) was established to work towards a new health system that will better respond to the needs of northern First Nations people in Manitoba. This new system will be developed through speaking directly to health care experts and communities and negotiating with systems so that services can be tailored to meet the needs of each First Nation and northern First Nations as a collective.
KIM supports health and wellness services for 23 First Nation communities in northern Manitoba with a focus on equitable care, addressing racism in the health care system, responsiveness to emerging needs, and filling gaps in the health care system. This is accomplished through advocacy, collaboration, and integration with the First Nation communities, and federal/provincial partners.
The Clinician will conduct their medical practice in a manner consistent with KIM Mission and Objectives as articulated by KIM as follows:
OVERVIEW OF THE POSITION
The Clinician takes a team approach, a family approach, a community approach. This position requires a dynamic and compassionate Primary Care Clinician to serve First Nations communities in Northern Manitoba. You must be dedicated to serving First Nations communities and support First Nations Health Sovereignty. This multifaceted role combines elements of primary care, community health, public health, chronic disease management, pediatrics, emergency medicine, mental health, child & maternal health, geriatric care, teaching, education, research and mentorship. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical skills and a deep commitment to anti-racism and trauma informed care.
The Clinician must be committed to advancing healthcare transformation that is focused on innovative primary care models using Physician Assistants (PA), Nurse Practitioners (NP), Clinical Assistants (C.A), Pharmacists, Respiratory Therapists (RT), Paramedics, Physicians and supporting advanced scope of practice for all clinicians.
QUALIFICATIONS
- General clinical experience with preference for clinical experience working with Northern First Nations
- Master’s degree, Nurse Practitioner.
- Current and maintained CRNM registration.
- Maintain certification in BLS, ACLS, PALS, ITLS, NRP, ALARM
- Strong knowledge, skill and judgement in primary care, emergency medicine, child & maternal health, pediatrics, geriatrics, chronic disease management, and mental health
- Strong organizational and problem-solving skills
- Ability to build strong relationships with patients and community leaders
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and teamwork skills
- The ability to speak one of the Northern First Nations language is desired.
- Experience with narcotic and OAT prescribing preferred.
The following are considered conditions of employment:
- Certificate of Practice with the College of Registered Nurses of Manitoba.
- Proof of Third-Party Medical Liability Insurance, minimum $10,000,00/occurrence.
- Satisfactory criminal record/vulnerable persons/child abuse registry checks.
- Must be able to travel throughout Manitoba, with appropriate notice, by air, land, and boat.
- Must be eligible to work in Canada
DUTIES
The specific Medical Services and on-call coverage, as applicable, to be provided by the Clinician shall be determined by KIM, but in general:
- participation in any on-call program in place at the FN Reserve as of the date of the execution of this agreement which provides after hours services to the patients of the First Nation;
- attendance at patient care conferences and staff meetings;
- provision of comprehensive medical care to patients in relation to the diagnosis of and active management of specific chronic disease(s) (i.e., the Nurse Practitioner may not impose a “one issue per visit” or similar such limitations on patients);
- provision of seminars and teaching sessions to the interprofessional team on current medical topics, if requested, and upon reasonable notice from KIM;
- provision of teaching support and mentorship to Master PAs, Clinical Assistants, Pharmacists, Nurse Practitioners, students, and other health care professionals where applicable;
- house calls in the First Nation on an acute basis, and also on a more regular basis for those known to be at risk with the support of KIM;
- minor surgery/minor procedures based on the Nurse Practitioner’s skill set and the availability of equipment and supports at the site;
- participation in, and support of relevant provincial primary care renewal initiatives including but not limited to the Advanced Access initiative, the Provincial Patient Enrolment Registry, and in relevant My Health Teams, as directed by KIM; and
- participation in applicable accreditation processes and local/regional quality roadmaps
- The Clinician shall cooperate with other health care team members, including where applicable, primary care managers, to facilitate the implementation of inter-professional and/or team-based patient-centered care models and further support the development of inter-professional practice by:
- cooperating with patients, clients, families, and communities when designing and implementing care and services;
- applying leadership principles in support of a collaborative practice model;
- supporting positive team dynamics and group processes to enable quality patient care and effective inter-professional collaboration in routine practice.
CLINICAL SITES AND PROGRAMS
The clinician will be required to provide the Medical Services for 1 or more clinical sites or programs as a Locum Clinician
- Visiting Professionals Service (VPS)
a) Tataskweyak Cree Nation
b) Manto Sipi Cree Nation - Visiting Professionals Support Service (VPSS)
- All KIM associated clinics, nursing stations and programs as needed
